How do you find the right balance between attentive and intrusive?

What one guest might find attentive, another might perceive as intrusive. The best approach is to slowly feel your way forward and observe guests carefully until you have worked out what their needs are. Developing this sensitivity is definitely one of the most important and most exciting aspects of being a host – but I do want to stress one thing in particular: authenticity is of paramount importance. If I’m constantly playing a role, my guests will notice. For me being natural comes first, and everything else follows.
